Custom jewelry is made in various ways. There is the ancient way, by actually forming and shaping gold by hand and tools. Jewelers would heat, stretch, bend, cut (mini hacksaws) and tap (hammer) jewelry which was excruciatingly lengthy and difficult.

Then, there is lost wax casting, known simply by casting. Here, a jeweler would make a mini sculpture of the piece of jewelry he was making. This wax carving would then be added to a base, like welding but in wax. Then, the base gets a plastic cylinder put around it and they pour a liquid plaster, referred to as investment all around it. (this is a mixture of water and powder, that you have around 9 minutes before it hardens so you can pout over wax carving, but first, you vacuum the investment on a specific investment machine to remove air bubbles)
