PITTSBURGH Darryl Sutter, whether he knows it or cares, has become a patron saint for puck po se sion and puck po se sion, for whatever reason, is a controversial topic. That's what people talk about when they talk about Corsi and Fenwick and and: how effective teams are at driving even-strength play."The games changed," . "They think theres defending in todays game. Nah, its how much you have the puck."PHOTOS: So it was ironic, and at least a little odd, to see Sutter's Los Angeles Kings losing the puck po se sion battle against the Pittsburgh Penguins on Thursday night. For 50 minutes or so, the teams e sentially reversed their traditional roles, with Pittsburgh taking the majority of 5-on-5 shot attempts and the Kings using special teams one power-play goal, another immediately when a power play expired, and seven penalty kills to find their way to a 3-2 lead. Mikkel Boedker Jersey "They obviously had the puck a little more, and we were taking some penalties because they had the puck," Kings defenseman Drew Doughty said. "We need to keep that po se sion up and get in on the forecheck, turn over pucks and get the forecheck going."That happened midway through the third: The Kings tied Pittsburgh with their 29th unblocked even-strength attempt, then went into lockdown mode. End result: LA had 35 to Pittsburgh's 30, and all was right with the statistical world."We're a Logan Couture Jersey puck po se sion team," captain Dustin Brown said. "I thought we had a lot more of it in the third. As a result, there was more 5-on-5 play."Pittsburgh, even when healthy, is succe sful because of Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin, the league's top power play and what at times has been the league's best penalty kill. It's rare that any team gets seven power-play opportunities, as Crosby noted after the game, and it's rarer still that the Penguins, specifically, waste them."We did some good things it just wouldn't go in. It's disappointing," Crosby said.At even strength in close situations, though, of all unblocked shot attempts, which is 15th in the league and a le s-than-great harbinger for their postseason plans. The Kings, in comparison, are first overall in that category at 56.6 percent, but have the No. 24 power play, with a 14.0 percent conversion rate, and are 26th in goals, averaging 2.39 per game."We can grind teams 5-on-5 and we happened to get that power-play goal today, and that helps, but we've got to stay out of the box," Brown said.Doughty said the same, and he certainly has a point, but the team still came Martin Jones Jersey out of its Eastern swing with six points and even if the last two came in a somewhat unorthodox way, the Kings know who they are."We're playing hard, we're scoring goals, which we sometimes struggle to do, and we're playing good defensively like always," Doughty said. "To be hitting our stride at this point and beating some very good teams that we had to play in the East right now, that's a huge confidence booster."RUNNING INTERFERENCEAnd about that 0-for-7 night on the power play: Pittsburgh nearly made it 1-for-7, when Brandon Sutter jammed a loose puck (and Kings goalie Martin Jones' pad) into the net, but officials ruled it a Joonas Donskoi Jersey non-goal because of interference.Predictably, Sutter and Doughty, who may or may not have caused Sutter to hit Jones in the first place, had different views.Brandon: "It was loose the whole time. I definitely got pushed into the net and the puck went off of me somehow. I have no idea how they didn't call that a goal."Drew: "Oh, it was clear interference. He pushed Joner's pad right into the net. Yeah, I gave him a few shots from behind, but that had nothing to do with his stick pushing Joner's pad into the net. It's a great call by the refs and the people in Toronto or New York, or wherever it is."Crosby summed it up: "I've seen it go both ways, and unfortunately for us tonight it didn't lead to a goal, but we had a number of chances besides that," he said. "We Justin Braun Jersey had six other power plays too, where we could've had opportunities too."WAGONS EASTThe Kings, in four nights, won 3-2 in Philadelphia, 5-4 in Washington and 3-2 in Pittsburgh. It's the exact sort of trip they probably wouldn't have made under the league's old scheduling rules (and definitely didn't make last season, during the lockout-shortened schedule)."I love the way the schedule is, because we get to see guys like this, like Crosby, and go to Philly and see Giroux, and (Washington) to see Ovechkin," Doughty said. "It's fun to step up and have to play those guys, such high-level players, and coming to those cities the atmosphere of some of those arenas is amazing."Darryl Sutter used the A-word, too: "They're all such good buildings I said that with the other two and this one, too. They're all such good atmospheres and good buildings and good teams."
